Default Rice Allergy?

My 5 month old son seems to have bloody/mucus stools after having tiny amount of rice cereal mixed with water...just wondering if anyone else has heard of this?

People do have allergies to rice. Another thing to consider is that not all rice cereals are just rice. You have been able to pin point it to just the rice cereal?

I used to have problems with puffed rice (which is what I'm assuming was in the rice cake) but not with boiled/steamed rice. I may still have problems - it's been well over 10 years since I tried puffed rice.

I assumed at the time that the "puffing" process changed one of the proteins in the rice to something that didn't agree with me, but can't give you anything more than that.

Other things that could have caused you problems:

- the variety of rice that was used. Basmati rice or other flavoured rice is more likely to cause problems than "normal" long or short grain rice.
- the rice husk (the brown bit) contains various sterols and other compounds which may have caused you problems.

People who are allergic to rice can sometimes react to a number of other foods from the same botanical family, such as barley, maize, wheat, oats and rye, as well as other foods such as peach and apple.
